McGinnis Ferry Road Interchange Awarded $24.8 Million Construction Contract

Officials expect the new interchange to open in the spring of 2026

A new interchange on Interstate 85 at McGinnis Ferry Road has been awarded a construction contract by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

CMES Inc. was awarded the $24.8 million construction contract. It was one of 44 construction contracts announced by GDOT on Tuesday morning. State officials said it was one of the most important bridge-related contracts in the group.

“Seventeen percent, or approximately $30.7 million, is for three construction projects,” GDOT said in a statement. “The most significant construction project will construct a new interchange on I-85/SR 403 at McGinnis Ferry Road. The project also includes the construction of a bridge and approaches over I-85/SR 403 in Gwinnett County.”

For years, the McGinnis Ferry Road interchange has been in the works, with officials saying it is needed to address traffic and congestion in the area.

GDOT officials believe improvements from a new interchange at McGinnis Ferry Road would reduce congestion on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, in addition to cutting northbound queuing of traffic in I-85’s auxiliary lane.

GDOT officials also believe the new interchange will reduce traffic accidents in the area.

Officials expect the new interchange to open in the spring of 2026.
