Wilmington, Massachusetts is starting the first phase of a multi-year, $5.46 million road construction project this week with the goal of improving the intersection at Lowell Street and Woburn Street.
The project is estimated to take three years to complete, with the first phase beginning with mobilization, erosion control, tree/shrub clearing, and drainage improvements.
According to the town of Wilmington, motorists should expect delays during construction. It's not expected that the intersection will be fully closed during this phase, though there will be lane closures.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) selected MDR Construction Company, Inc. as the contractor on the project.
The road project will have the following highlights:
- New traffic signals, traffic signal posts and overhead booms, to provide modern equipment with increased visibility for all modes of transportation.
- Corridor (lane) widening with dedicated left turn lanes on all four approaches to the intersection.
- A new dedicated right turn lane for the eastbound approach of Lowell Street.
- Bicycle lanes on all four approaches to the intersection.
- New sidewalks, ADA/AAB accessible ramps, crosswalks, and pedestrian signal equipment on all four approaches to the intersection.
- Drainage and utility work.
