WEBINAR OVERIVEW:

The I-85/485 Interchange will feature a two-level turbine configuration that features swirling lanes that take left-turning traffic around a central bridge in a clockwise direction.

The design requires space for sweeping high-speed, high-capacity ramps, and calls for the construction of 18 bridges—three times more than a stacked interchange. However, the spans call for thinner columns, drilled piers, HP pile foundations and spread footings, making construction easier, and the turbine’s flexible ramp placement will result in fewer environmental impacts. The turbine interchange, which is expected to cost $30 million less than the four-level stacked interchange, is scheduled to be complete in early June 2014.

John N. Johnson, P.E.
STV, Vice President

Mr. Johnson has more than 22 years of experience as a project manager and design engineer for interstate and thoroughfare projects and has provided oversight for projects for numerous municipalities and state Departments of Transportation. As the manager of STV’s civil engineering staff in its Charlotte office, he is responsible for various multidisciplinary projects throughout the state.

He is the project manager for the I-495/I/85 Interchange modification project in Charlotte, NC. The Charlotte Outer Loop will improve access to residential, commercial, and retail centers throughout the Metrolina region by relieving congestion on parallel east-west roadways.

A registered professional engineer in North Carolina, he received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the North Carolina State University.
