This week, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is holding its annual Washington Briefing which began Tuesday, Feb. 27, and will last through Friday, Feb. 28, at the Washington Court Hotel in the nation’s capital.
According to AASHTO, the meeting is meant to focus on legislative issues related to transportation policy, infrastructure funding, and safety, as well as ongoing efforts aimed at developing a national strategy to support transportation automation.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao is delivering the luncheon keynote address on Wednesday, while Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R)—chairman of the National Governors Association—will giving the luncheon keynote address on Thursday.
Members of Congress are providing their insight on critical transportation legislation during the Briefing’s Wednesday morning session. They include: Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyoming); House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon); House T&I Subcommittee on Highways and Transit Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-Illinois); and House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade Chairman Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon).
Patrick McKenna, Missouri DOT director and AASHTO’s 2019-2020 president, will lead a panel discussion this week at the Briefing entitled Toward Zero Deaths: State DOTs Renewed Focus on a National Public Health Crisis.
