No. 9 - I-40

Oct. 2, 2016

One of the most active interchanges in the region (40% of traffic is truck) deserved a contractor that was fit for the job. Mountain States Constructors Inc. hammered out 35 lane-miles of a complete rebuild in just 85 days. Frequent rainfall during the initial weeks of construction had the prime contractor working around the clock to stay on target. Four asphalt lifts were necessary, and a Superpave SP3 warm-mix asphalt blend that contained 15% RAP was used. A recipient of the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s Larry H. Lemon Award, the new road had a smoothness average rating of 37 in. per mile.
