As the final phase for the Delaware Memorial Bridge rehabilitation project commences next week, two New Jersey-bound lanes are set to be closed until Thanksgiving.
The construction is expected to begin on the evening of Labor Day, until the week of Thanksgiving, with the bridge's northbound right lanes being closed during this time.
The project began last fall with the goal of rebuilding the driving surface of the 72-year old span.
For this final phase, a bypass lane on the Delaware-bound span of the bridge will be built starting on Monday and is expected to be finished by September 8. While the bypass lane is being created, the two left lanes of the Delaware-bound structure will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with a third lane closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
The single lane will serve motorists headed to the New Jersey Turnpike after the bypass lane is open.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA), which oversees the bridge, said its engineers have designed the project to minimize traffic congestion on the bridges, but that some congestion may still occur during rush-hour periods and peak weekend travel times.
