Work Begins on North Padre Island Bridge

Feb. 2, 2024
Completed bridge will feature 5 lanes

Work toward development of a new North Padre Island bridge began work this week.

The bridge will eventually be considered part of the planned Whitecap North Padre Island development set for what was formerly the Schlitterbahn property, off Commodores Drive.

Construction for a temporary bypass roadway along Commodores Drive “will allow traffic to continue on Commodores Drive while the new bridge is built,” said Abbey Parks, company representative, to the Caller-Times.

The bridge is proposed to have five lanes and anticipated to act as a connector between island’s north and south sides.

“The new open water connection will allow for improved water circulation resulting in improved water quality throughout the canals,” Parks said. “The bridge will allow for 14-foot air draft clearance underneath for boat traffic.”
