The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is closing the Caloosahatchee River Bridge for 10 weeks starting May 31. FDOT says this is intended to expedite the current construction project.
The Caloosahatchee Bridge connects North Fort Myers and Fort Myers with U.S. 41 running over it and connecting directly to McGregor Boulevard. The bridge goes over part of Centennial Park and First Street in downtown Fort Myers. Directly south of the bridge is its connection to McGregor Boulevard, SR 80 and SR 82.
"This closure is intended to expedite the project's completion by up to 18 months and will ensure greater safety for both construction crews and motorists," said an FDOT spokesperson in a statement.
The bridge has been down to one lane going both south and northbound for the $25 million project. They're adding an eight-foot sidewalk on the west side of the bridge going south.
Previously, the plan was to finish the construction in two phases. During phase one, crews would work to remove the overhead sign, replace the bridge deck and remove the existing walls. The second phase would focus on the actual installation of the sidewalk, which will connect to both downtown Fort Myers and North Fort Myers.
So far, electronic message boards and other signage have been used to provide alternate routes and estimated travel times.
The project was expected to be done in Spring 2026, but again, it's said to be expedited with the closure.
Work will now include the installment of an eight-foot sidewalk on the west side of the southbound bridge, connecting the two bridge decks in the center with a single median barrier, and restriping the lanes. This addition, according to FDOT, aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the bridge.
Additionally, the current bridge lighting system will be replaced with new double arms poles on the new median barrier.
FDOT is set to host a press conference about the decision to close the structure.
FDOT says the bridge is expected to reopen on August 11.
