Seattle to Strengthen 16 Bridges for Earthquakes

May 23, 2024
Five of the projects have been completed

In 2015, voters approved the nine-year, $930 million Levy to Move Seattle which is committed to providing funding to improve safety and maintain Seattle streets and bridges.

Now, thanks to the Levy funding, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is on track to deliver 16 bridge seismic retrofit projects through the Bridge Seismic Program.

From 2016 through 2024, the Bridge Seismic Program has been funded by $67 million in Levy to Move Seattle funding and an additional $14 million in other funding.

Five of the projects have already been completed, such as the Cowen Park Bridge, the West Howe Street Bridge, and the 8th Avenue NW/NW 133rd St. Bridge.

Eleven more of the retrofit projects are on track with major work taking place this year. Currently, the McGraw St. Bridge and the Delridge Way Pedestrian Bridge are under construction having been started in March and April.

Some of the other projects that are beginning in 2024 are:

  • 13th Ave. NW/Holman Rd. NW Pedestrian Bridge
  • 15th Ave. NE/NE 105th St. Bridge
  • Admiral Way North Bridge
  • McGilvra Blvd. E. Bridge
  • N. 41st St. Pedestrian Bridge

SDOT says they will continue to reach out to the community and the traveling public to share details on construction and detour routes.
