Seattle Plans Ballard Bridge Maintenance

Aug. 28, 2024
Replacing the expansion joints on the structure will begin in September

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has planned several weekend closures for maintenance and preservation work for the Ballard Bridge.

SDOT plans to replace 16 bridge expansion joints on the over century old structure. Those components keep the bridge operational through temperature fluctuations and seismic activities.

The replacement of the expansion joints involves removing and examining the condition of concrete, steel and rebar. Then, new joints will be installed and capped off with concrete. It needs a 24-hour curing period before traffic can use the bridge.

The construction team on the project already completed paving the Ballard Bridge. Sidewalks and intersections for pedestrians also got an upgrade, including concrete replacement, tree pit improvements and new signage.

The old asphalt was more deteriorated than expected, according to SDOT.

Work will take place from Friday evening to Monday morning on select weekends throughout September and October. Drivers and freight are being detoured to the Aurora Bridge.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the bridge.
