On Tuesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that construction has begun on a bridge replacement project in Whitesboro on the New York State Thruway.
The project will be completed in three phases. The first phase, which began Monday, will prepare the median crossover areas for the rest of construction.
The second phase is anticipated to begin next spring. All westbound traffic will shift to eastbound lanes as the westbound span of the bridge is removed and rebuilt. The third phase will begin in 2026 with the eastbound span being removed and rebuilt.
Crews will be using metalized girders and steel components during construction, which will prevent rust and corrosion, according to the New York State Thruway.
“New York State remains committed to developing a modern and resilient infrastructure system that aims to improve the quality of life for residents and travelers alike,” Gov. Hochul said in a statement. “The Thruway Authority’s investments throughout the State are focused towards modernizing and enhancing the 70-year-old Thruway system, as well as job creation and boosting local economies that depend on safe, reliable roads to reach their destinations.”
Traffic on the bridge and at least one lane of traffic in each direction on Oriskany Boulevard will remain open during construction.
The $9.3 million project will be completed by Tioga Construction.
