Michigan’s Lafayette Bridge Project is Underway

Sept. 16, 2024
The project plans to demolish the structure and build a new drawbridge

The $112 million Lafayette Bridge rebuild in Bay City, Mich. has begun with crews repaving along the detour route.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) closed Henry Street between Wenona Street and Jenny Street as contractors lay asphalt. It will be closed for approximately four weeks.

A railroad crossing and road surface repave is scheduled for Wenona Street on Sept. 30. The railroad crossing will close for four days. Lane closures will accommodate the rest of the repaving.

Wenona Street and Henry Street will be the detour route as the Lafayette Bridge is closed for 30 months starting this winter. MDOT will demolish the existing bridge and build a new drawbridge.

MDOT wants to begin demolition before Nov. 1.

The project is being partially funded by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) with $73 million of the funding secured from the IIJA. MDOT previously said the project is funded by an 80/20 split between federal and state funds.

The project is expected to be finished in August 2027.
