The Veterans Memorial Bridge that spans Lancaster and York Counties in Pennsylvania will be shut down for three years starting in 2027. Despite it being a few years away, officials are planning for the project because it is complex.
The project aims to refurbish the bridge and make it safer for pedestrians and bicycles.
Traffic would be diverted to the Route 30 bridge and officials are saying they have a plan to reduce congestion in the event of a crash.
Dave Thompson, the community relations coordinator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said in the event of a crash, officials plan to use additional lanes from the opposing side of traffic to divert vehicles around the accident.
Once the project is completed, one of the goals is for the new bridge to require very little upkeep and the surrounding areas keep traffic flowing. Part of that effort is creating designated areas for bicyclists and safer walking areas for pedestrians.
The changes to the bridge will require the bridge to be taken apart piece by piece and then rebuilt. Transportation officials say the rebuild will maintain the look of the historic structure.
