The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) began work today on a project to replace the Maryland Route 5 bridge over Hilton Run in St. Mary’s County.
Crews will remove and replace the structure. They will reconstruct over 1,000 feet of roadway leading to the bridge, install traffic barriers and a new stormwater management facility and update the signage, pavement markings and landscaping.
During the initial weeks of constructions, daytime flagging operations will guide traffic through work zones. This will allow workers to deliver and install necessary equipment. A signal will be installed as the project progresses to regulate traffic flow.
Martins Construction corporation was selected to carry out construction. The project will be completed in stages to minimize disruption during peak travel hours.
The 87-year-old bridge is safe for travel, but is nearing the end of its serviceable lifespan, according to MDOT SHA. The project aims to address the bridge’s structural needs and upgrade the surrounding area to improve safety and traffic flow.
The project is part of MDOT SHA’s system preservation program. The program ensures the safety and mobility of Maryland travelers while maintaining critical elements of Maryland’s transportation network.
The cost $6.8 million project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
