Michigan DOT Opens New M-30 Bridge

On Monday, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) opened the M-30 Bridge that was washed away during a 2020 dam failure. After more than four years, the roadway where Midland and Gladwin Counties was cleared.

The new three-span bridge is 234 feet long with two 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders, compared to the old 60-foot-long single-span bridge with similar-sized lanes and only 5-foot shoulders. The new bridge also includes 5-foot sidewalks on both sides and sits 2.5 feet higher.

MDOT began working on the $12.4 million investment in March, building a permanent three-span structure on M-30 over the Tobacco River to replace the temporary bridge that was installed in 2021.

The temporary bridge was installed to restore mobility quickly until the permanent one could be built.

State Rep. Bill G. Schuette said he appreciates all the hard work and resilience that was put in making the bridge.

"We rebuilt stronger, we rebuilt better. And we did it ahead of schedule,” he said.
