Colorado DOT Plans to Reopen U.S. Highway 50 Bridge

Crews have made major repairs on the structure

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) plans to open one lane of the U.S. Highway 50 bridge on Oct. 16 thanks to crews making “significant progress on major structural repairs” on the middle of the bridge.

The bridge was closed for inspection and repairs on April 18 after investigators found “anomalies” and a defect at milepost 136.3. The road partially reopened on July 4 for emergency and small vehicles and was only open for 12 hours daily.

CDOT plans to open the bridge in a single lane configuration on Wednesday. This is being used as a pilot program for CDOT and construction will continue overnight from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The remaining construction will prepare the bridge for both lanes open to drivers before winter, according to CDOT.

Traffic over the bridge will continue to be one direction at a time, and heavier vehicles will be sent over the bridge one at a time as crews remove the temporary work deck from below the structure.

Once the bridge opens to all vehicles, the pilot car operations on County Road 26 will end. The road is still open and can be used as an alternate route.

Another alternate route is Kebler Pass, however there are restrictions for that road.
