South Carolina's John E. Caldwell Bridge Reopens

Oct. 31, 2024
Newberry agreed to replace the structure instead of relocating it

After more than three years of construction, the John E. Caldwell Bridge in Newberry County, S.C. has reopened. The project was originally expected to open in November 2022. However, it was delayed for several months.

According to the city of Newberry, the delay was due to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) “coordinating with the railroad and moving utilities for private telecom companies.”

Plans to reconstruct and relocate the bridge were introduced in 2013. In 2014, the city agreed to replace the bridge instead of relocating it.

Residents had to wait several years before construction officially began in 2021, leading to the bridge’s closure until it was completed.

“The Boundary Street Bridge is an important bridge to the city of Newberry. It connects two of our main arteries, Drayton Street and Nance Street,” said City Manager Jason Taylor. “We are very glad DOT took this project on, and they have done a wonderful job with getting the bridge reconstructed and open again.”

The John E. Caldwell bridge officially reopened on Oct. 24.
