Sherman Minton Bridge Opens Lanes Over Ohio River

Nov. 1, 2024
The renewal project connecting Kentucky and Indiana reaches last phase of construction

The Sherman Minton Bridge, which connects Kentucky to Indiana, has reopened in each direction during weekdays.

The Sherman Minton Renewal project is rehabilitating and painting the structure to extend the life of the 61-year-old bridge. It is currently in the final phase of construction.

Crews are replacing lighting and the vertical hanger gables along the exterior of the bridge. They also have installed Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment for traffic monitoring, as well as finished painting and added permanent striping.

All remaining construction activities will take place on weekends and during overnight hours. They will require blocked lanes.

One lane will remain closed in each direction as crews install new hanger cables and remove existing cables. Two eastbound lanes will be open on the bottom deck, and two westbound lanes will be open on the top deck.

“We greatly appreciate the public’s patience and support for this major rehabilitation project that will add up to 30 years of life to this vital community connector,” said Royce Meredith, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet project manager.

Phase one of the project began in September 2022, and it is expected to be completed in mid-November.
