Indianapolis Department of Public Works crews discovered human remains and 15 grave shafts last week during excavation for the Henry Street Bridge project.
The discovery happened while crews were installing the project’s shoring stabilization system. The system protects crews from dirt collapsing during the excavation process.
Archeologists identified the remains, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology were notified of each discovery.
Local historian and PhD candidate Leon Bates warned officials about the human remains years ago.
“It is not a surprise,” Bates said. “We knew this was going to happen. They are just beginning to start construction over there. And major construction has not started and they have found 15 sets of remains which suggests to most of us that they’re going to find more.”
The city is working with Stantec to excavate the entire Henry Street Bridge site to look for remains.
“They’re good. They know what they are doing,” Bates said. “They’ve done these kind of projects before. They did the Bethel Cemetary out at the airport a couple of years ago so they have experience right here in town doing the same kind of project. But they are very competent, very good people. They will find everyone they can.”
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
