A major construction project in Michigan will leave a heavily traveled portion of the East Beltline closed for several years as crews complete a full bridge replacement.
The East Beltline Avenue bridge that goes over the Interstate 196/Interstate 96 freeway is going to be fully replaced in 2027, a project that will fully close the bridge for one construction season, said Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) spokesperson John Richard.
The project will include enhancing vehicle lanes and adding pedestrian walkways and bicycle infrastructure. The goal is to improve access and enhance traffic safety for motorists and pedestrians.
The deteriorating East Beltline bridge has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced, said Zach Kolodin, chief infrastructure officer and director of the Michigan Infrastructure Office.
It was built in 1961, at a time when the surrounding area was largely rural and agricultural. The Grand Rapids area has grown significantly since then, leading to more traffic throughout the area.
The four-lane East Beltline connects communities from Battle Creek to Traverse City and provides local access to the east-west highway, which can create traffic flow problems due to traffic weaving over several lanes in the interchange area, according to an MDOT assessment of the area.
The project is expected to cost $35 million. The state received a $25 million federal grant to help cover the cost.
There is no start date for the project.
