Drivers on Market Street in West Philadelphia should expect intermittent lane closures through April 14, 2025, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) undertakes a $148 million bridge improvement project.
The project will enhance the Market Street bridge over Amtrak and Interstate 76, including partial demolition and replacement of the structure at Schuylkill Avenue West and Market Street.
The deck and sidewalks on the bridge spanning the Schuylkill River will also be replaced. Additionally, the existing four-span bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad will be reconstructed as a single-span bridge with retaining walls.
Improvements include reconfiguring Market Street’s pavement between Schuylkill Avenue West and 23rd Street to improve traffic flow for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, according to PennDOT.
The new design features two 10-foot travel lanes in each direction, turning lanes and wide sidewalks. A two-way bicycle lane with concrete separators will connect to existing bike infrastructure at 23rd Street, and a bicycle signal will be installed at Market Street and Schuylkill Avenue West.
Traffic signals will be upgraded, and Intelligent Transportation Systems will be implemented. The project also includes enhancements to highway, bridge and navigation lighting systems, as well as riverbank repairs and pedestrian staircase improvements.
Major closures include a 14-month Market Street shutdown from August 2026 to October 2027.
The four-year project is funded 80% by federal funds and 20% by state funding.
