Cincinnati Is Getting a New Pedestrian Bridge Over Interstate 71

The $6 million structure will go alongside the existing two bridge system

Cincinnati is getting a new $6 million pedestrian bridge that aims to connect Downtown Cincinnati and Mt. Adams. State officials have chosen the design for the new structure.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), the current bridges are deteriorating, having been built in the 1960's.

The current two bridge system, known as the Court street Steps, will be replaced by the new bridge. It will offer pedestrians access over Interstate 71/I-471 and Gilbert Avenue/US-22.

“ODOT is focused on maintaining the safety of those using the bridges, as well as those traveling underneath the structures, and after studying the condition of the bridge system, it was determined that replacing the structures is the safest and best option,” an ODOT spokesperson said.

It will cost approximately $6.6 million.

After a feasibility study by ODOT last year, they began public engagement.

According to ODOT, the new bridge will maintain the connection between East Court Street and Van Meter Street, sitting beside the existing two-bridge system.

The next step for ODOT is to coordinate with the Cincinnati Department of Transportation and Engineering on enhancements such as surface treatments, signage, fence types, colors and lighting.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
