Washington-Oregon Interstate Bridge Could Change to a Single Level

Feb. 17, 2023
The original design had criticism from the public

During a community advisory meeting on February 9, head engineer of the Interstate 5 Bridge Replacement Project, Greg Johnson, said “We are looking at a bridge configuration of a single level.”

The single level design is a departure from the preliminary design which consisted of two bridges with vehicular traffic on the top decks and light rail, bicycle and pedestrian capacity on the lower decks.

A large, single deck may be the right design choice, according to Johnson

Johnson says his group is simply evaluating all possibilities.

“The bridge configuration has not yet been determined, and a single-level bridge was never eliminated from consideration,” he says. ”We are looking at multiple options for bridge configuration so we can maximize efficiencies by understanding the range of impacts and benefits.”

The replacement project aims to improve the structure, build a new bridge west of the old one, and improve access to pedestrians, and bicyclists.

The project is estimated to cost $7.5 billion.
