BRIDGE REPAIR: $1 million bridge project approved despite N.J. roadwork shutdown

July 25, 2016

NJDOT provided the emergency funds as a result of flooding damage to the bridge project on Route 202

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has approved a $1 million emergency project to replace a U.S. Route 202 bridge in Bernardsville damaged by recent heavy rains and flooding.

The work is taking place despite the suspension of Transportation Trust Fund projects on July 8 that occurred when state legislatures and the governor could not agree on a plan to provide revenue to the fund, which expired at the end of June.

NJDOT has said the suspension of projects allows there to be enough funds available for emergency projects, such as the Route 202 bridge replacement.

On Friday, Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) and Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson) proposed a revision to the proposed gas tax increase, which could lift the shutdown for N.J. roadwork. A vote could come as early as Aug. 1.
