Work to repair corroded beams on the Kennedy Bridge discovered on July 7 is taking longer than expected. The Kennedy Bridge carries I-65 traffic over the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana. The diseased steel was uncovered on the Indiana approach while workers were removing joints as part of a separate project that started on June 22. That job also consisted of patching concrete and installing an asphalt weatherproofing membrane on the bridge deck. Officials hoped to open more lanes on the Kennedy by July 12, which would allow traffic on ramps from I-64 west to I-65 north and Exit 0 at Jeffersonville. However, the relief was put on hold until further notice.
“[Repairing the corroded beams] was something that needed to be done before another several years passed, and this was the opportunity,” Will Wingfield, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation, told the Courier-Journal.
