Damage brought about by the deadly storm in South Carolina is expected to top $1 billion
The record downpours that brought flooding to many parts of South Carolina have stopped, but bridge collapse and dam breaches are now a problem, along with rivers expected to crest in the days and weeks ahead. More than 500 roads in the state were also severely damaged by the storm.
Eight counties are eligible for federal aid under a disaster declaration signed by President Barack Obama and more than 1,300 National Guard members have been deployed in the state.
"I anticipate that damage will probably be in the billions of dollars, and we're going to have to work to rebuild," said Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.
