K-5 Highway Bridge Declared Unsafe and Closed After Inspection

According to a news release put out by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), officials had to close the southbound Kansas 5 bridge over Union Pacific Railroad on Monday. The Kansas City bridge was deemed unsafe by KDOT engineering staff after an inspection of the structure.

“KDOT is evaluating options for an emergency repair and working to develop full traffic control plans,” the traffic agency said in the news release.

Delaney Thonlen, a spokeswoman for KDOT, said in Wyandotte County bridge closed at noon Monday after bridge inspectors consulted with KDOT engineering staff.

The bridge is closed between Sunshine Road and 10th Street.

Currently, message boards are in place to direct drivers where to go until detour signing plans become available.

Officials from the city, county, and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) have been notified of the closure, as well as the business district, and Union Pacific Railroad.

It is unknown how long the repairs will take.

KDOT is urging drivers to be alert and drive safe when driving through work zones.
