LED lights will help driver visibility by dimming or brightening to match outside conditions
Tunnel vision can improve; just ask those at the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The agency is about to complete the Carlin Tunnels project on I-80, and the highlight of the enhancement is an LED lighting system that will enhance driver visibility by dimming or brightening according to outside conditions. There is no other system like it in the U.S.
The $31 million project began in May 2013 and is expected to finish in September. The eastbound Carlin Tunnel and surrounding interstate has been renovated, and the westbound tunnel has been repaved and repainted, and crews also have built one of two new concrete bridge decks. The old lighting system has been removed in preparation of the installation of the more advanced system.
The roadbed leading up to and through the Carlin Tunnels also is expected to be reconstructed and will feature enhanced roadway drainage. Tunnel monitoring cameras and an ice warning system also will be installed, and eight bridges will be retroffited.
