Doosan reaches milestone with more than 400,000 excavators and wheel loaders produced worldwide

July 2018—Doosan Infracore North America, LLC, is celebrating the milestone of producing more than 400,000 excavators and wheel loaders for markets worldwide, since the company entered the construction equipment market in 1978. In 1978, Doosan began producing and shipping crawler excavators – the DH series – from its excavator production plant in Incheon, which opened a year earlier. The company continued to enhance its excavators and launched the new Solar series in 1985. Just two years later, the company had already produced more than 10,000 units. At the start of the 1990s, the company began production of its wheel loaders – the DL series. In 1992, Doosan introduced its Mega series wheel loaders, and a year later, the company launched the Solar-III series excavators. 1993 also marked a major excavator milestone – 30,000 units had been produced. In 1994, Doosan entered the North American market. The company continued its excavator and wheel loader developments in the mid-1990s. A new Mega-III series of wheel loaders was launched in 1996. In 1997, Doosan launched the Solar-V series excavators, and the company received ISO14001 Certification. Two years later, Doosan reached 50,000 excavators produced.

Mike Schagrin, former U.S. DOT connected and autonomous vehicle leader, joins McCain

July 24, 2018—Connected and automated vehicle (CAV) expert and former U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) leader, Mike Schagrin, has joined McCain Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the SWARCO Group and a leader in the supply of advanced intelligent transportation solutions for safety and mobility. In his new role, Schagrin will provide overall leadership and direction to the company’s expanding CAV effort including McCain’s vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and intelligent infrastructure offerings for business, academic, and deployment activities. Schagrin comes to McCain with decades of ITS experience, most recently at his successful CAV consulting firm, Schagrin Consulting International LLC, where he worked with vehicle manufacturers, device suppliers and infrastructure providers. Prior to operating his own firm, Schagrin spent nearly a decade as the program manager for Connected and Automated Vehicle Safety at the US DOT ITS JPO, leading major connected vehicle research initiatives and managing a budget that topped out at $40 million per year. 

CASE, Hills Machinery support Team Rubicon mudslide cleanup in North Carolina

July 23, 2018—CASE Construction Equipment dealer Hills Machinery provided Team Rubicon with a compact track loader and excavator to assist in mudslide cleanup in Polk County, North Carolina in the wake of record rainfall. The work — part of Team Rubicon’s “Operation Mountain Laurel” — included re-routing a stream within its original banks after mudslides shifted its course, and clearing mud and debris from numerous properties. Hills Machinery provided the equipment as part of the partnership between CASE and Team Rubicon — a veteran-led disaster response organization comprised of more than 80,000 volunteers that has responded to more than 275 disasters across the world since 2010. CASE supplies Team Rubicon’s heavy equipment operators with machinery to assist in cleanup efforts.

Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute announces 2018 CRSI HONORS Design and Construction Awards recipients

July 20, 2018—The Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute announces the results of their biennial CRSI HONORS Design and Construction Awards program. Of the entries received, 19 projects were selected to receive recognition. Project entries were evaluated on the basis of: (1) Satisfaction of Owners Objectives, (2) Development of Innovative Solutions, (3) Maximizing Project Value, (4) Effective Use of Reinforced Concrete and (5) Overall Aesthetics. Twelve submittals received an HONORS Award while seven received a Merit Certificate. The following projects were selected for recognition in the bridge category:

• I-90 Dresbach Bridge, LaCrosse, WI (Figg Bridge Engineers, Inc.) – HONORS Award
• I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Improvements, Brattleboro, VT (Figg Bridge Engineers, Inc.) – HONORS Award
• Capital Cascades Crossing Pedestrian Bridge, Tallahassee, FL (Figg Bridge Engineers, Inc.) – Merit Certificate

Jason Martwig, P.E., joins LAN as senior structural project manager

July 19, 2018—Jason Martwig, P.E., joins planning, engineering and program management firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) as a senior structural project manager. In this role, he will be responsible for the technical design and management of bridge structures in highway and transit projects. Martwig has nearly 20 years of experience as a structural engineer. Previously, he served IEA Inc., as a senior engineer and project manager of its bridge group. His responsibilities included managing the group’s production staff, mentoring junior engineering staff, and assisting in project pursuits. Prior to that role, he worked at Huitt - Zollars, Inc. as a bridge engineer.
