New York State will see some federal funding coming its way, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Governor Kathy Hochul who made the announcement on Friday in Buffalo.
New York will see a $55 million federal grant from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) with a goal of rebuilding the Kensington Expressway.
“The restoration of communities along the Kensington Expressway is going to be one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Buffalo ever," said Senator chuck Schumer. "This project is one of the very first in the nation to tap the historic Reconnecting Communities program. And it is the largest grant anywhere in America of this program yet."
“It will reconnect this community to places that people count on every day, parks, churches, schools and jobs. Including notably Tops supermarket, where ten people lost their lives, which will now be better connected to the rest of the community as well. Healing takes time. But it's work like yours that keeps us moving forward,” said Buttigieg.
Syracuse is also developing a Reconnecting Communities project, however that is in the planning stages.
