The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recently issued approximately $140 million to cities, towns and counties as part of the latest disbursement from the Community Crossings matching grant program.
That program is a component of the 20-year Next Level Roads initiative established in 2017 by Gov. Eric Holcomb and the state legislature. It aims to enhance Indiana’s highways and local roads by awarding communities grants for “shovel-ready” local road construction projects.
“Community Crossings has been an annual highlight over the years,” the governor said in a statement. “The fact that nearly 14,000 miles of road and over 200 local bridges have been replaced or rehabilitated through this program since 2017 is simply astonishing. [That is] in addition to countless economic and quality of life benefits in hundreds of communities across Indiana.”
Communities submitted applications for funding during a highly competitive call for projects in July. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund.
Since its inception in 2016, the Community Crossings initiative has provided more than $1.8 billion in state matching funds for local road improvement projects. Below, you can see the fall award amounts for some of our area communities:
- Vanderburgh County: $1,064,117.75
