Ohio Allots $24 Million in Grants for Traffic Safety Improvements

Programs will center on education, enforcement and awareness

The Ohio Traffic Safety Office is awarding $24 million in grants for statewide programming for traffic safety improvements and to reduce traffic-related fatalities.

The large sum award will fund 189 grants throughout the state. Of those 159 grants were awarded to 145 local agencies in Ohio. The remaining 30 are statewide initiatives.

  • Statewide programming – A total of $13.6 million was awarded through 30 grants to 18 agencies. The programs will establish initiatives centered on education, enforcement and awareness to address traffic-related issues.
  • Impaired driving enforcement and selective traffic enforcement program – A total of $5.5 million was dispersed over 91 grants.
  • Summer holiday enforcement program – A total of $270,961 was given through 14 grants to local police departments for summer overtime to reduce traffic fatalities.
  • Dedicated traffic enforcement program – A total of $159,002 was awarded through 2 grants to one sheriff’s office and one police department to fund a traffic enforcement officer position.
  • Countywide OVI task forces – A total of $2.4 million was awarded through 10 grants to agencies conducting countywide high visibility enforcement, public awareness and impaired driving initiatives.
  • Safe community programs – A total of $2.2 million was given through 42 countywide grants to fund traffic safety issues.

“These grants will support the ongoing efforts in Ohio to save lives and reduce injuries on our roads,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine in a press release. “From raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving to increasing enforcement to take impaired drivers off the streets, these programs will contribute to making the roads safer for everyone.”

Agencies throughout Montgomery, Miami, Shelby, Miami, Greene, Clark, Butler and Mercer counties are recipients.
