U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Sean Duffy has unveiled an updated version of the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, offering nearly $1 billion in funding to help communities improve road safety.
The revised program removes diversity, equity, and environmental justice requirements, which Duffy said had previously slowed the funding process.
"This is another great step in our Department’s work to refocus on what the American people care about: safety," Duffy said in a statement. "I encourage communities to apply for this funding to reduce road fatalities and make our roads safe again."
The SS4A initiative provides financial support for local, regional, and Tribal governments to develop safety action plans and implement roadway improvements. USDOT has streamlined the application process to ensure greater accessibility, particularly for smaller communities and first-time federal funding recipients.
Eligible applicants include cities, counties, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), transit agencies and multijurisdictional groups. Funding can be used for planning, infrastructure upgrades and pilot safety programs aimed at reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries.
The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) makes over $982 million available this year, with a similar amount anticipated for next year.
