The American Galvanizers Association (AGA) has assembled three industry experts to provide an informative webinar on recent developments in the use and performance of Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) rebar. HDG rebar has emerged as a solution to the transportation industry’s objective to provide concrete bridge decks and substructure units a 75-100 year design life with minimal maintenance.
Participants will learn about HDG rebar production and the corrosion protection zinc provides to reinforcing steel. Speakers will discuss relevant industry standards for specifying HDG rebar. The proven performance of HDG rebar through case studies of structures in service for over half a century will be presented, along with the criteria and rationale used by selected state DOT’s and Authorities regarding the use of HDG rebar.
How HDG rebar provides the lowest cost of ownership shown through life cycle cost comparisons of HDG with other competitive products.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of the webinar, participants will be better informed on specifying corrosion resistant reinforcing steel for their next transportation project. Viewers will also be able to:
- Understand how hot-dip galvanized (HDG) rebar provides corrosion protection for reinforcing steel in concrete
- Demonstrate HDG rebar performance with real world examples
- Understand the current criteria of various state DOTs and Authority’s, and their corrosion protection criteria for various bridge types
- Recognize the ability of ASTM A767 (Class 1) HDG rebar to provide 100-year life without major maintenance

Speaker Profile:
Frank Gerace, P.E.
Market Development Director, Hubbell & Sons, Inc.
Frank Gerace is presently employed by O. W. Hubbell and Sons, Inc. He serves in the position of market development for galvanized products such as bridge and guide rail, concrete reinforcement, architectural galvanized products and hot dipped galvanizing in general. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Galvanizer’s Association and sits on the AGA Market Development Committee (MDC). As such, on the MDC he represents all of the galvanizers in the Northeast.
Prior to working at Hubbell, Mr. Gerace worked for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) for over 35 years. During that time, he served as Deputy Commissioner and Chief Engineer for the NYSDOT. In this position, he was responsible for all aspects of the NYSDOT highway system. This included the delivery of both the highway and bridge capital improvement program and the maintenance and operations programs for the entire state highway system. Other positions he held include Assistant Commissioner of Operations, and Regional Director of Transportation in Regions 2 and 6; In his capacity as Regional Director, he managed all modes of transportation within a six-county area. During his tenure, Frank had responsibility for managing regional Planning, Traffic and Safety, Highway Maintenance groups.

Martin Gagné is a graduate of the University of Toronto [B.A.Sc] and McMaster University [M.Eng] and has 30 years of experience working primarily on zinc coatings, castings and energy applications. He is an award-winning public speaker, has over 60 published papers and one patent. Martin is currently the Principal of ZELIXIR Inc, a technology and market development company.
Peter Melewski, P.E

Peter Melewski, PE is the owner of Peter Melewski LLC. Peter has been in the transportation industry for 38 years, the first 24 years at the New York State Thruway Authority where he held critical statewide positions such as: Superintendent of Thruway Maintenance; Director of Design; and Director of Bridge Management. Peter served as the Executive Project Manager for the Tappan Zee Bridge Replacement Study. He subsequently entered the private sector, establishing Capital District, New York offices for three industry-leading consulting firms. He was the Project Manager for “Walkway over the Hudson” the conversion of an historic 1.25- mile railroad bridge over the Hudson River into a phenomenally successful State Historic Park. He holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University, and an MS in Urban and Environmental Studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. www.petermelewski.com
