Arizona DOT granted environmental approval for I-10 Broadway Curve project

The Arizona DOT (ADOT) recently announced it has been granted environmental approval to continue moving forward with plans to improve an 11-mile section of I-10 that includes the Broadway Curve.

ADOT issued a Finding of No Significant Impact after completing a Final Environmental Assessment for the I-10 Broadway Curve project in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The Final Environmental Assessment includes comments from the community received during and after public meetings in February and October of 2019.

The project includes adding lanes between the I-17 “Split” interchange and the Loop 202 Santan/South Mountain Freeway, improving the interchange at U.S. 60, replacing the interchange at S.R. 143, and making other improvements.

According to ADOT, this 11-mile stretch of roadway is a key commerce corridor and has seen increasing levels of traffic over the past few years, especially during the weekday morning and evening peak hours.

Some of the major design improvements include:

• Widening I-10 to six general purpose lanes and two HOV lanes in each direction between U.S. 60 and 24th Street, and adding a fourth general purpose lane in each direction between U.S. 60 and Ray Road
• Adding a collector-distributor road system between Baseline Road and S.R. 143.
• Modifying connections between I-10 and S.R. 143 and Broadway Road to improve traffic flow and create HOV lane connections, including construction of new bridges and S.R. 143 improvements between I-10 and University Drive
• Modifying the interchange of I-10 and U.S. 60, including improvements to U.S. 60 between I-10 and Priest Road
• Constructing three pedestrian bridges
• Building sound and retaining walls

Currently, ADOT expects to begin construction in summer 2021. Work is scheduled to continue until late 2024.
