PennDOT Begins Bridge Repairs on I-95

July 22, 2024
The project has a price tag of $37.4 million

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced bridge repairs and construction on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia. This is expected to cause traffic backups and delays.

Beginning today through Thursday, July 25, a right lane closure will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Allegheny Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge Interchanges.

Southbound I-95 will also be affected from today through Friday, July 26. A single lane closure will be in place, followed by a double lane closure between Ashburner Street and Bleigh Avenue. Crews will perform diamond grinding and lane striping.

Northbound I-95 will see a similar disruption beginning Wednesday, with crews performing diamond grinding and lane striping.

Crews will also be conducting core borings from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the northbound ramp to the Betsy Ross Bridge. The core borings are part of the design phase for PennDOT’s upcoming I-95/AF3 project. This will reconstruct northbound I-95. Construction is expected to begin in 2025.

The project will cost $37.4 million. It aims to perform high-priority repairs on 27 I-95 bridges in the city. These repairs are crucial for maintaining the functionality, safety, and mobility of the structures.

PennDOT encourages motorists to plan alternate routes and allow extra time for travel.
