Construction is set to begin Monday on the new Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 50 Business Interchange project in Pueblo, Colo.
The project will construct five new bridge structures, retaining walls and noise walls, roadway and ramp reconstruction. Crews also will add embankment, safety improvements, drainage and erosion control along five miles of roadway, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
When it’s complete, the new interchange will be just north of the existing location and operate as a diverging diamond interchange to “increase safety and mobility for drivers,” CDOT officials said in a Nov. 13 news release.
“The new I-25/US 50B interchange is a priority for CDOT because the current interchange poses safety concerns with many trucks on the interstate hitting the low clearance bridge or getting stuck on the interchange itself,” CDOT Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson said in the release. “The new diverging diamond interchange will help improve traffic flow on this important freight corridor and increase safety and mobility for all road users.”
CDOT will replace one bridge across the Union Pacific railroad tracks with two smaller bridges. The existing bridge over Fountain Creek will be replaced with a wider, single bridge and the bridge over I-25 will be replaced by two smaller bridges.
The project has a price tag of $114 million and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.
