Omaha’s I-680 High Mast Towers Being Replaced Starting Today

Feb. 3, 2025
Expect nighttime lane closures as NDOT upgrades to energy-efficient LEDs

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) will replace the high mast towers along Interstate 680 interchanges starting today.

Crews are replacing lights from L Street to U.S. Route 75 closer to the Mormon Bridge. Towers will also be replaced closer to downtown Omaha near the Interstate 480/U.S. Route 75 interchange.

NDOT District Construction Engineer Barbara Gerbino-Bevins said drivers will also see the towers help illuminate the roadway. Current towers in this stretch have some wear and tear. They will be replaced with a new design.

“Everything is being upgraded to LED. It’s a global upgrade, much brighter, uses much less energy,” said Gerbino-Bevins. “The new towers will also be shorter than the existing towers.”

Impacts to travel are expected to be light during the upgrades. You could encounter some lane and ramp closures along the way but those will be in place at night, between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. for material delivers.

Down the line, Pacific Street could have some delays. Gerbino-Bevins says in initial talks with the contractor, crews might have to position their equipment on the I-680 southbound on-ramp or right on Pacific Street.

However, the full extent of those impacts are not known currently and the details are still being worked out.

Crews will work until the fall. Work will take place throughout the day, weather permitting.
