Crews with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will resume work on U.S. Route 127 in early March, according to the transportation agency, which held an open house to share information about the next phase of the U.S. 127/Interstate 496 project.
When southbound construction begins, MDOT will rebuilt roadways, add lanes and rehabilitate ramps and bridges.
"My hope is that eveybody sees how nice that (new side of the feeway) is, and maybe we get a little extra patience from the public this year while we're working on southbound," said Trevor Block, who oversees construction projects for MDOT in the Lansing area.
Crews are expected to start work March 3 and have traffic controls in place by March 17. This year's work should be done in October or November, according to Block.
MDOT expects to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction on the newly rebuilt northbound side. But "pinch points" will remain at the north and south ends of the work zone, where traffic is shifted from one side of the freeway to the other, Block said.
"It’s the same scope of work this year, just on the southbound side," Block said. "It's going to be very similar to last year, but the lanes will be wider for traffic going through the area. Hopefully it will be more comfortable."
The cost of revamping the freeway between the two interstates is approximately $205 million.
