The American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials President James Codell III presented the 2001 and 2002 Perpetual Pavement Awards during a special ceremony on Tuesday as part of the APA Asphalt Pavement Conference: Superpave 2003. The Perpetual Pavement Award is presented by the Asphalt Pavement Alliance to asphalt pavements that were constructed at least 35 years ago and that have demonstrated long-life characteristics, excellence in design, quality in construction and value to the traveling public. Engineers at the National Center for Asphalt Technology evaluate nominations for the award, and a panel of industry experts validates the winners.

The 2001 winners were the New Jersey Turnpike Authority for the entire New Jersey Turnpike; the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for sections of I-40; and the Washington State Department of Transportation for sections of I-90 in western Washington.

The 2002 winners were the U.S. Air Force for a runway at Eareckson Air Station in Alaska; the Iowa Department of Transportation for I-80 in eastern Iowa; the Maryland Department of Transportation for two runways at Baltimore-Washington International Airport; the Minnesota DOT for a section of I-35; the Missouri DOT for a section of I-44; the Oklahoma DOT for a section of I-40; and the Tennessee DOT for a section of I-65.
