The American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation has named Halbert Powers Gillette to its "Top 100 Private Sector Transportation Construction Professionals of the 20th Century."

Gillette was the founder of the predecessors of today's Roads & Bridges magazine and Scranton Gillette Communications Inc., Des Plaines, Ill. As a private contractor he was an assistant engineer for New York State until 1902. Gillette worked for Engineering News magazine before starting the Gillette Publishing Co. in 1905. His published works include: Economics of Road Construction, Earthwork and its Cost, Handbook of Rock Excavation and Handbook of Cost Data. Later works include Roads & Streets, Engineering & Contracting, Water Works and County Engineering magazines.

ARTBA-TDF will honor those on the list with a dinner in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 21.
