VDOT to create westbound express lane through i-64 construction zone

July 22, 2004

Motorists who travel through the Interstate 64 Coliseum Central Highway Improvement Project between I-664 and Hampton Roads Center Parkway are getting a new option. As the contractor begins work on the westbound lanes, non-local traffic heading westbound will have the option of using an express lane through the project. Weather permitting, the new express lane should be open to through traffic on Tuesday morning, July 27.

The express lane will be separated from the regular westbound lanes of travel by concrete barriers. The entrance to the lane will be located near the I-664 split over Newmarket Creek. The first available exit point for drivers on the express lane will be at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

The lane will allow motorists to avoid merging traffic and potential slow downs at interstate exit and entrance points. Emergency pull-off areas will be provided in the express lane where space permits.

In addition to the express lane, two lanes of local traffic (for access to exits including Mercury Boulevard, Magruder Boulevard and Hampton Roads Center Parkway) will be maintained throughout the work zone.

The express lane is being created in an effort to maintain three lanes of traffic through the work zone as construction on the westbound lanes begins. For more information about this, or any VDOT construction project, visit www.VirginiaDOT.org.
