The Transportation Expansion (T-REX) Project is being honored by the Colorado Performance Excellence (CPEx) program for its sound management and systems practices. T-REX will receive the CPEx Timberline Award at the 2004 CPEx Awards luncheon today at the Marriott Denver Tech Center for its development and deployment of a sound management plan.
During the CPEx assessment process, T-REX was evaluated on its key management processes developed for the project, which include project direction, quality audit program, project controls, public information program, contract change control and partnering. CPEx assessors made a site visit of the T-REX Project and evaluated the T-REX organization based on established CPEx criteria.
CPEx is a nonprofit effort based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program. CPEx’s mission is to advance and recognize the efforts of Colorado industry, nonprofit, health care, education and governmental organizations committed to quality and performance excellence.
The T-REX Project is a unique highway and light rail expansion partnership of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Regional Transportation District (RTD). Both agencies have staff that directs the project management team, which also includes private sector team members.
"This award acknowledges the hard work, insight and overall commitment of the entire T-REX team," said Tom Norton, CDOT executive director. "We are very proud that CPEx recognizes the partnership that we’ve set up to maintain our project goals of minimizing inconvenience to the public and providing a quality project."
"Because of the unique nature of this project, we knew from the beginning how important it would be to develop a management team that could work together effectively," said Cal Marsella, RTD general manager. "We’re confident that regardless of the various opportunities and challenges we face on T-REX, our team is able to address and resolve these issues because of the management practices we have in place."
The T-REX Project is a $1.67 billion effort along the southeast corridor of I-25 and I-225. Construction is scheduled to be complete in September 2006; Southeast Corridor Light Rail is on track to open in December 2006. Visit
