Despite mayor veto, Alaskan Way Viaduct forging ahead

On the 10-year anniversary of the Nisqually earthquake, members of Seattle’s city council made a solid stance against Mayor Mike McGinn.

Due to concerns over initial cost and cost overruns during a time when the city is fighting for cash, McGinn vetoed agreements for the Alaskan Way Viaducts’s deep-bore tunnel replacement. The override passed by an 8-1 margin.

The Nisqually earthquake weakened the current viaduct, creating a fierce call to action in an effort to replace the structure.

The Nisqually earthquake weakened the current viaduct, creating a fierce call to action in an effort to replace the structure.

“Today’s actions are the outcome of a passionate debate that our region has engaged in through these past 10 years,” Seattle City Councilmember Richard Conlin told the Puget Sound Business Journal. “While there have been differing opinions, the contributions of thousands of thoughtful citizens have brought us to this solution.

“This Council is proud to confirm the city’s role and commitment to this project.”

The Washington State Department of Transportation tore down one of the ramps connected to the current viaduct on Feb. 19.
