Virginia Transportation Commissioner Philip Shucet announced the appointment of Constance Sorrell to the new position of Chief of Systems Operations. In this role, Sorrell will create a new focus and direction for improving travel throughout Virginia.
Sorrell will direct innovative approaches to managing incidents and VDOT's roadway assets, such as pavement and structures, as well as traveler information systems, snow and ice control and work-zone traffic controls.
Sorrell, a 32-year veteran of Virginia state government, will bring to the post 10 years of legislative and executive branch experience in addition to 22 years of VDOT transportation experience in the administrative, policy, organizational development and operational areas.
"Connie's proven track record as a leader in all aspects of the organization, especially her district experience in managing a major local transportation program, gives her a unique advantage in being a strong advocate for the traveling public," said Shucet. "Under her leadership, VDOT has become nationally recognized in the transportation industry for implementing quality, productivity and accountability programs."
In conjunction with her new position, Sorrell will serve as interim Hampton Roads District Administrator where she will evaluate ways to bring congestion relief to motorists.
