ARTBA announces specialized programs

Oct. 1, 2007

Building transportation infrastructure—particularly projects financed by public agencies—demands complex leadership, management, specialized safety training, business and negotiation skills not required by general construction managers. That’s why the American Road and Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) has developed specialized programs to meet these professional development needs for transportation design and construction professionals.

Primavera Project Planner (P3) Scheduling Academy

November 14-16, Washington, D.C.

The ARTBA P3 Scheduling Academy focuses on key construction management skills that are essential to any individual in the transportation design and construction industry, providing participants with a clear understanding of effective application for advanced scheduling methodologies. Attendees will learn how to use schedules to manage and track construction projects—including materials, people, key operational benchmarks and payment schedules. And, they will gain “hands-on” experience with P3, including creating and using a schedule from scratch and following it from conception to completion.

Academy staff and instructors are led by Brigham Young University Professor Jay S. Newitt, who has taught construction scheduling in hundreds of seminars, programs and companies around the nation. He is also a contractor and author of Construction Scheduling, Principles and Practices. Newitt will guide professionals through the complex principles of Critical Path Method scheduling, demystifying the process and helping to maximize P3 software for managing successful projects.

The academy is especially beneficial for estimators, schedulers, project managers, superintendents, project managers and senior managers.

Transportation Builder Institute: The Management Crucible “The Transportation Construction MBA Program”

December 3-7, 2007, Washington, D.C.

The Management Crucible is an intensive week-long program teaching fundamental MBA-style management principles. It focuses on these key topics: management and leadership, finance and accounting, business operations, economics and strategy and planning.

The program is designed to strengthen the professional abilities of executives and managers working in the transportation construction field who do not have a formal business education. It is ideal for professional construction managers and engineers. The program is built on a successful adult learning model—participants are encouraged to learn from each other and from instruction provided by industry experts.

Program graduates can also earn up to 40 professional development hours.
