The city of Rutland has selected the Vermont-based engineering firm Dufresne-Henry to lead a $4 million improvement project for the U.S. Rte. 7/Rte. 4 corridor that runs through the city.

The project involves slightly widening the Main Street section of Rte. 7 to allow for a center turn lane, as well as combining and reducing existing access and enhancing the street lighting, crosswalks and sidewalks along the road. These improvements will ease traffic congestion, improve safety for turning vehicles and provide safer means for pedestrians to travel along this urban route.

As part of this project, Dufresne-Henry also is leading the redesign of Main Street Park, which is located at the intersection of Rte. 7 and Rte. 4. The new design aims to enhance the aesthetics of the park, provide better pedestrian routes within and around the park and improve access to the downtown business district from the park area.

Highway and park improvements will consider the existing facade and atmosphere of the historic area, much of which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The project will take approximately three years to complete.
