Closed to traffic since Dec. 27 for rehabilitation, Boston’s Callahan Tunnel was scheduled to reopen on Monday, March 10—a full two days ahead of schedule. MassDOT and contractor McCourt Construction will continue to work on paving and barrier and detour removal throughout the rest of this week.

The Callahan Tunnel is an underground channel connecting downtown Boston to East Boston and Logan Airport. Boston-based McCourt Construction received a $19.3 million contract to lead the project, which sports a budget of $25 million.

Numerous items must be addressed over the course of this week to fully reopen the tunnel to traffic, including:

  • Closure of exit 24 off southbound I-93 to remove barriers and install lane markings;
  • Removal of large detour signage, part of which will require closure of southbound I-93 overnight Tuesday;
  • Reinstatement of Commercial Vehicle Only restrictions and high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane 2+ restrictions; and
  • Removal of traffic cameras.

Ongoing single-lane restrictions and overnight closures are expected to continue as construction work goes on in the months ahead.
