Arkansas Aims to Improve Pedestrian and Bike Safety

Sept. 4, 2024
The campaign encourages motorists to stay alert and protect lives

The Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office has launched the Extreme Safety campaign. It runs from Sept. 3 to 16.

The campaign aims to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety on Arkansas roadways while addressing concerns around safety for vulnerable road users.

Cyclists should wear helmets, check their brakes and follow the rules of the road. Pedestrians should use crosswalks, cross at designated areas and stay alert and aware.

For drivers, this will highlight the importance of avoiding distractions, following speed limits, and using caution at crosswalks.

"Our goal is simple yet crucial — encourage motorists across the state to help protect the lives of pedestrians and cyclists who are often at a higher risk on our roads,” said Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar. “By following safety guidelines and staying alert, together we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure Arkansas roadways are safe for all.”

Recent data shows that pedestrian fatalities in Arkansas reached a 10-year high in 2020 with 82 deaths. Urban areas are hazardous, accounting for 64% of pedestrian fatalities.

Officials will run a second campaign called Fourth Wall from Oct. 7 to Oct. 19 for National Pedestrian Safety Month. This campaign will focus on road safety and shared responsibility with all road users.
