The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is one step closer to finishing the Interstate 94 widening project.
I-94 has been expanded from two lanes in each direction to three, an extension of a previous expansion between US-131 and Lovers Lane. Now, the process of putting traffic on the newly built westbound lanes is underway.
Motorists will see westbound lanes closed between Sprinkle Road and Lovers Lane Monday night, June 19, from 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. It was previously closed on Thursday, June 15.
Construction will continue after, and only two lanes will be open with work continuing in the coming weeks and the new interchange at Portage Road is finished.
The project was originally scheduled to be completed in November of 2022, however construction was delayed due to multiple factors including supply chain issues that affected the availability of concrete, staffing delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, and design changes.
The project costs $87 million.
